She has been living in Washington State sine 1967. All through her early years of raising a family she never had any doubt she would become a professional artist. Painting with watercolors, she also spent many hours sketching, drawing, and teaching classes until she received a grand and a scholarship to participate in a three year graphic design and fine art program at Spokane Community College. She graduated with honors in 1981, freelancing as an illustrator and graphic designer while tutoring painting classes. In 1986 Christa Malay set up a silkscreen printing studio with her partner Martin. They moved to Lopez, an island off the northwest coast of Washington State. Malay has designed and printed more than 130 serigraph editions, receiving many commissions from art galleries, ski resorts, town festivals, and summer vacation destinations in Canada, Oregon, California, Colorado and Washington. Painting Serigraphs is very physically demanding work and after ten years of repetitive movements, her elbows demanded a change in venue. All along Malay had been painting in watercolors and pastels. Large scale landscapes of her surroundings on the islands resulted in many sales and commissions. She has created more than 1600 original pieces of art in watercolors, pastels and oils. Christa Malay has been exhibiting regularly and successfully every year in solo shows, group exhibitions, art invitationals, and competitions, winning several awards. One such award led to her work being published in the International Artist Magazine and also in the book titled “How Did You Paint That?” Since 1998 Malay has also published her etching on zinc plates through Island International Artists, on Guemes Island, Washington. These etching are individually enhanced with pastel or watercolor.
