After high school he chose to attend the Shanghai Drama Institute, as there were no fine art institutes in Shanghai at the time and he could learn painting in the Stage Art Department. Unfortunately when the Cultural Revolution began classes were cancelled and he was sent to the Shanghai Shipyard to work. Anyone who dared to learn was regarded as counter-revolutionary, so studying and painting had to be done in secret. Still, Lin Chong continued to work on his painting skills with professors who loved art and gave him guidance. After the Cultural Revolution Chong became a set designer and artist in residence of the Shanghai peoples art theater, where he received national recognition for his paintings. Chong later participated in an advanced oil painting class at SDI’s Fine Arts Department, where he attracted the attention of the president of Singapore Southern Fine Arts Institute, who invited Chong to have his first one-man show in Singapore. In 1988 Lin Chong went to the United States and within months was discovered by art dealers and contracted to paint for them. Lin Chong’s work employs bold lines combined with blocks of color. He has inherited the essence of Impressionism, the most recognizable form of art, and infused it with modern consciousness and spirit. His combination of traditional stylistic expectations with the charm of the East differs from those of the modern Impressionism school as it is known in the West. Chong uses western painting materials and skills to express the essence of Chinese painting in a subtle melting pot of his own understanding. Buyer will pay actual shipping cost.
